A breakthrough on “loss and damage,” but also disappointment, at UN climate conference

Delegates from MIT attended COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, where international climate negotiations went down to the wire. The conference offered breakthroughs on "loss and damage" and promising developments in terms of climate adaptation. Professor Elfatih Eltahir, the HM King Bhumibol Professor of Hydrology and Climate aT MIT and co-director, Jameel Observatory-CREWSnet, traveled to COP27 to present plans for the Jameel Observatory Climate Resilience Early Warning System (CREWSnet), one of the five projects selected in April 2022 as a flagship in MIT’s Climate Grand Challenges initiative. The Jameel Observatory-CREWSnet focuses on climate adaptation, the term for adapting to climate impacts that are unavoidable.
