MIT Climate and Sustainability Consortium awards inaugural seed Awards

John Lienhard, director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Water and Food Systems Lab (J-WAFS) and Nicolas Hadjiconstantinou, professor in the department of mechanical engineering are among the recipients of the 2022 MIT Climate and Sustainability Consortium (MCSC) Seed Awards. John and Nicolas received funding for their project, 'Sustainable separation and purification of biochemicals and biofuels using membranes'.

Twenty projects have received a total of USD 5 million over two years. The project leads are from all five of MIT’s schools and their projects tackle issues delineated in four focus areas: Decarbonised and resilient value chains, circularity and materials, natural carbon sinks and social dimensions and adaptation. The awards are envisioned as a complement to MIT’s 2020 campaign, 'Fast forward: MIT’s climate action plan for the decade', and the upcoming Climate Grand Challenges. Through the MCSC Seed Awards programme, the hope is that members and researchers will reach their ambitious climate goals and share key takeaways with their respective industries.
