ORGANISATION

Dimitris Bertismas is the faculty lead for entrepreneurship at the MIT Jameel Clinic, the epicentre of machine learning and healthcare at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). An MIT faculty member since 1988, Dimitris also holds the positions of associate dean of business analytics, Boeing Leaders for Global Operations Professor of Management and professor of operations research. His research interests span optimisation, stochastic systems, machine learning and their application. In recent years, he has worked in robust optimisation, statistics, and applied probability, with applications in healthcare, finance, operations management and transportation.

Dimitris has founded several companies including Dynamic Ideas LLC and Dynamic Ideas Press, a publisher of scientific books, and Benefits Science, a company that designs health care plans for companies, among others.

Dimitris has coauthored more than 300 scientific papers and seven graduate level text books, including: 'Introduction to linear optimisation' (with J Tsitsiklis, 2008); 'The analytics edge' (with A O'Hair and W Pulleyblank, 2016); 'Machine learning under a modern optimisation lens' (with Jack Dunn, 2019); and 'Queueing theory: Classical and modern methods' (with David Garmanik, 2022). He is the editor in chief of INFORMS 'Journal of optimisation' and former department editor in optimisation for management science and in financial engineering in operations research.

He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering since 2005, an INFORMS fellow, and have received numerous research awards including the Morse prize (2013), the Pierskalla Award for best paper in health care (2013), the best paper award in transportation (2013), the Farkas prize (2008), the Erlang prize (1996), the SIAM prize in optimisation (1996), the Bodossaki prize (1998) and the Presidential Young Investigator Award (1991-1996).

Dimitris holds a bachelor's of science in electrical engineering and computer science from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, as well as a master's of science in operations research and a PhD in applied mathematics and operations research from MIT.
