Jameel Institute at Imperial convenes experts in health, science and economics to discuss post-COVID-19 world
World-leading experts in health, science and economics discussed the post-COVID-19 world at the inaugural Jameel Institute symposium.
Central bankers, a Nobel laureate, epidemiologists, public health policymakers and a former Prime Minister came together for the symposium, ‘Shaping the post-COVID-19 world’, which marked the first anniversary of the Abdul Latif Jameel Institute for Disease and Emergency Analytics (J-IDEA).
In a dramatic first year since its launch in October 2019, the Jameel Institute has been on the frontline of the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of the Imperial College COVID-19 Response Team, the Jameel Institute has modelled the spread of the virus, publishing reports that informed the public health response worldwide.
The symposium was opened by Alice Gast, president of Imperial College, and Fady Jameel, vice chairman of Community Jameel, an international organisation using evidence, science, data and technology to tackle urgent global issues. Imperial and Community Jameel co-founded the Jameel Institute in 2019.
In a series of panels, experts from a range of disciplines looked ahead to the post-COVID-19 world, addressing the public health response and lessons learned; the economic recovery; and how to prepare for future diseases.
The speakers included:
- Neil Ferguson, director of the Jameel Institute
- Sir Jeremy Farrar, director of the Wellcome Trust
- Esther Duflo, winner of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economics and co-founder of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL)
- Gita Gopinath, chief economist at the International Monetary Fund
- Jonathan Haskel, member of the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee
- John Nkengasong, director of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention
- Dame Sally Davies, UK special envoy for antimicrobial resistance and master of Trinity College, Cambridge
- Peter Smith, professor of health policy at Imperial
In a special video recording, Rt Hon Tony Blair, former British prime minister, spoke with the Jameel Institute’s director.
The sessions were moderated by Jameel Institute faculty: Nim Arinaminpathy, Katharina Hauck, and Tim Hallett.
