The Jameel family embarks on a new chapter of supporting the community
This year, 2020, marks the 75th anniversary of the Jameel family’s tradition of supporting the community. The last twelve months have seen some momentous achievements and success stories for Community Jameel – the co-founders at J-PAL winning the Nobel Prize in Economics, the 25th anniversary of the Jameel-Toyota Scholarship, the discovery of the antibiotic Halicin by the Jameel Clinic at MIT, and the ground-breaking work of the Jameel Institute at Imperial College London in modelling the spread of COVID-19, which helped inform and assist policymaking around the world.
At this significant milestone, Community Jameel is embarking on a new chapter which will see several strategic changes due to be fully implemented by the end of November:
1. Bab Rizq Jameel and Art Jameel will become standalone units
Having been part of Community Jameel since 2003, Bab Rizq Jameel and Art Jameel will now become standalone units with separate management. Both organisations have grown significantly to become major forces for positive change across the region.
2. A new focus for Community Jameel Saudi Arabia
Through Community Jameel Saudi Arabia, which operates as a separate entity, with separate management and funding, the family is scaling up activities in Saudi Arabia, expanding on decades of support for the community, including for the unemployed, the elderly, the infirm, orphans, and prisoners, and supporting society’s efforts to achieve the Vision 2030 agenda.
3. Community Jameel: innovating for a better future
Community Jameel will now focus on leveraging science, technology and learning to achieve breakthroughs in the fields of education, health and climate, and to deliver innovative solutions to those who need them most.
These new strategic changes will enable the Jameel family to harness the late Abdul Latif Jameel’s legacy and continue to deliver his vision for supporting the community in the years to come.
Commenting on this new chapter, Mohammed Jameel KBE, the Founder and Chairman of Bab Rizq Jameel and Community Jameel, said:
“The significance of our initiatives’ impact this year is a fitting way to mark 75 years for our family’s tradition of supporting the community, which began in 1945 with my late father. Building on his legacy, we embark on a new and exciting chapter in our history that will ensure Bab Rizq Jameel, Art Jameel and Community Jameel are positioned to make an even greater impact, in all of our key areas of work, at a time when the world faces an unprecedented number of social and economic challenges.”
