Mawheba | Emerging musical talent in Egypt
Synopsis
The Royal College of Music (RCM) in London, the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development and Community Jameel, in partnership with the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), invite young string and vocal talents, from age 14 and 16 respectively, to participate in Mawheba, a programme supporting emerging classical / opera singers and string musicians in Egypt.
Taking place in Cairo from 4-6 November 2024, Mawheba comprises a series of masterclasses, workshops and Q&As and is an unmissable opportunity to perform to RCM professors and receive immediate feedback within a friendly and supportive environment. The programme culminates in a performance at the GEM.
The RCM is the global number-one institution for the performing arts according to the QS World University Rankings for 2022, 2023 and 2024.

About the event
Who is Mawheba for?
Classical / opera singers and string musicians who are interested in studying music at a conservatoire in the future.
Age
- String musicians: Age 14+
- Classical / opera singers: Age 16+
Ability Level:
- String musicians: Grade 7+ (ABRSM) or equivalent
- Classical / opera singers: Participants do not need to have completed graded exams and we are happy to take teacher recommendations from certified institutions in regards to level / ability. An ability to read music is important.
Video submission repertoire requirements:
- Videos will need to be uploaded to YouTube as an unlisted video or uploaded to a cloud based server (e.g. Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive). The link to view / download your video will then need to be added to the application form in the space provided.
- Audio only recordings will not be accepted.
- Videos should not be edited or have any effects added.
- Videos should be a maximum of 15 minutes and should be in 1 take.
- Please state your name at the beginning of the video and the work you are about to perform (title, composer, movement) before each piece.
Repertoire requirements:
- Strings: One piece by Bach or Mozart and one contrasting romantic piece (2 items in total).
- Voice: One aria, one classical song in Italian, French, German or English and one classical Egyptian song (3 items in total).
