A multimillion-dollar museum and star-powered installations are arriving in Egypt. But its art scene remains desperate and disenfranchised

After years of quiet, Art D'Égypte brought the attention of the international art community to Egypt, but as the event opens its fifth edition at the Giza pyramids, it has come under increasing scrutiny from members of the Egyptian art scene who say that the exhibition excludes crucial elements of Cairo’s present contemporary art scene and that the wider drive to preserve Egypt's ancient history ignores the country's equally rich Islamic and modern art eras.
