Yousef Shawarbeh is the mayor of Amman, a position he has occupied since August 2017, after serving as deputy mayor from 2013-2016. He has previously held roles as Minister of Political Development and Parliamentary Affairs as well as chairman of the Amman municipal committee. In 2023, Shawarbeh was appointed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres to the UN advisory group on local and regional governments.
Shawarbeh holds a bachelor degree in law from the Al-Ahliyya Amman University, and a PhD in constitutional law from Al-Neelain University in Sudan.
