Navigating the polycrisis: Evidence-based policy for resilient cities | WUF12
Synopsis
Cities are both highly vulnerable and significant contributors to climate change. Rising inequality, conflicts and political division add layers to the current polycrisis. These challenges demand urgent and decisive action.
Community Jameel and C40 Cities – co-founders of the Jameel C40 Urban Planning Climate Labs – co-convene a panel discussion at the World Urban Forum in Cairo, Egypt, on 5 November 2024 from 11h00-12h30.
Showcasing work supported by the Jameel C40 Urban Planning Climate Lab in Amman, Jordan, and innovative models to support cities' integration of climate action into their strategic planning at both the local and national levels, the event will see the unveiling of the Climate Action Guide for Urban Planners, a resource of practical tips and case studies developed by UrbanShift and the Jameel C40 Urban Planning Climate Labs. With perspectives from the UN, government and research, this session analyses successes, openings and new pathways for collaboration to accelerate climate resilience action.
The panel is facilitated by Hélène Chartier, director of urban planning and design at C40, and includes:
- Yousef Shawarbeh, mayor of Amman
- Laia Bonet, deputy mayor for urbanism, ecological transition, mobility and housing for UN-Habitat
- Ahmed Elsayed, executive director of J-PAL MENA
- Ahmed K. AbuLaban, chief resilience officer and city director of Ramallah
