Soprano, 2021 Andrea Bocelli Foundation-Community Jameel Scholar at the Royal College of Music

Soprano Laura Mekhail is the first Arab musician to receive the Andrea Bocelli Foundation - Community Jameel Scholarship. Laura, who was born in Minya Governorate, Egypt, received the scholarship in 2021 and recently completed her master’s in musical performance as a Bocelli-Jameel Scholar at the Royal College of Music (RCM) where she studied under the tutelage of Sarah Tynan.

During her time at RCM, Laura was cast as Frasquita in 'Carmen' by Bizet and Amor in 'L'Esgisto' by Cavalli. She has appeared in concerts in Europe, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, where she performed at the Great Pyramids of Giza, Egypt in a recital organised in her honour by Community Jameel and the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development as well as at Luxor Temple in celebration of the centenary of the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb. In Saudi Arabia, Laura has performed alongside Maestro Andrea Bocelli in his concert in Al-Ula.

Laura's other roles include Rosina from 'Il Barbiere di Siviglia' (RCM Opera Scenes), two chorus roles in Jacques Offenbach’s 'Orpheus in the underworld' and in double bill spring operas, 'L'enfant et les sortilèges' and 'La bella dormente nel bosco' at the RCM. She is currently preparing for her recital in Green Opera's preview of John Joubert's 'Jane Eyre' ahead of its staged premiere in the UK, and will perform as 'Rose' in the UK premier of Jake Heggie's 'At the Statue of Venus' during the 2023 Grimeborn Opera Festival in London in September.
